Swashers – the best boffers in the universe!

Most of our programs make use of Swashers, which are a brand of boffer sports equipment shaped like medieval armaments. Since Adventure Quest began in 1995, we have been on a quest to create the perfect foam sword for our kids programs.

The Swasher Story

The first Swashers were crafted by Renaissance Adventures and we went through many design changes. In 2007, our Master Foamsmith Daelinar began a series of improvements to refine the design and construction of the Swashers, which continues to this day. In 2018 fellow foamsmith Blaise joined Daelinar at Majestic Adventures, and in the intervening years, contributed many improvements to the construction process, which allow greater flexibility, functionality, and beauty in the types of Swashers we can make. In 2023 Majestic Adventures got a full foam forge Swasher shop set up, and the forgemasters Blaise, Daelinar, and Jessie trained a select few more forge workers, so that we could increase production and fill the needs of an ever-growing camp. We are now equipped to quickly make Swashers that are safe, light, soft, beautiful, and very effective in duels!

Why are Swashers the Best?

While boffers can be homemade or purchased from a number of vendors, Majestic Adventures helped develop, recommends, and uses one particular type of boffer called Swashers. They are designed with a combination of specific qualities that, to our knowledge, no other manufacturer uses:

  • Safety. Swashers are incredibly safe. They are made so that no part can enter into an eye socket. Over the course of hundreds of thousands of hours of “play-testing,” there has never been a serious injury caused by a Swasher. Of course, like any sports equipment, participants should abide by all safety measures.
  • Durability. Swashers are made with sturdy materials and last for many years. Hand crafted to ensure quality worksmanship, Swashers are a kind of sports equipment that can withstand years of continued use. Besides normal maintenance needs, most of our Swashers last for over 15 years of regular use.
  • Medium Weight. We found there are few boffers that are a “medium” weight. Light-weight boffers – such as most latex swords – often have a whip-like motion (causing a safety and durability concern) and are unsatisfying to duel with because of the negligible leverage. Heavy-weight boffers – such as most homemade or reenactment swords – are often unbalanced, unsafe, and exhausting.
  • Fun Design. There are a ton of different models of Swasher and because they’re hand crafted, they can be customized. Swashers come with a cloth casing that can be a variety of colors, which can represent different elements or magical properties.
  • Guarantee. Swashers are guaranteed to have no manufacturing defects for up to six months from the date of purchase or we will replace your Swasher. Because they’re handmade and inspected, there are rare cases of defects so please do not hesitate to ask if your Swasher can be replaced. Note that we do not pay shipping fees related to the return and exchange of a Swasher so please inspect the Swasher before purchase. For this reason, we do not recommend ordering a Swasher “sight unseen.”

Other Boffer Types

We offer other brands of boffers, such as shields and throwing weapons produced by Epic Armoury. They can be found in the “Heroic Level Boffers” section of our online store. While these boffers do not share the same qualities as our Swasher brand boffers, they are safe and durable enough for our programs that we allow their use and sell them. Be warned, however: we have found that every latex boffer we have ever tried is not nearly as durable as Swashers. Most of them also require regular application of protective silicone (available as a gel or spray in our online store) to maintain their surface and extend their lifetime.

We do not guarantee or warrantee any product other than Swashers.

Paragon vs. Heroic Styles

Both “Paragon” and “Heroic” Swashers are a kind of Swasher brand boffers. They both exhibit the same qualities as detailed above, including our guarantee. However, the crafting methods, materials, look, and price are different.

Paragon Level Boffers – Swashers are the highest quality boffer sports equipment we know, has been tested for many years, and come in a large range of models. They are handmade in Bellingham, WA, and we use them in our camps and after-school programs (so they get used hundreds of hours per year). They are built to be safe, soft, and durable, to be used by ages 6+. If they ever need repair, we can repair them at our foam forge.

Heroic Level Boffers are a different make than the Paragon style and are less expensive because they are crafted using different materials and techniques. They do not have the same durability as our Swashers, and most require regular maintenance applications of silicon. If they are damaged we do not have the ability to repair them, and we cannot offer any guarantee or warrantee for them.

Safety Rules

  • Play lightly and safely.
  • Do not swing or tag hard.
  • Tag with the thin padded edge only.
  • Do not slap with the flat of the blade or tag with the hilt.
  • Do not tag the head, neck, groin, or any place that is susceptible to injury.
  • Do not throw – Swasher must be held in a hand at all times.
  • Do not duel in anger.
  • Do not use if tip is compressed or damaged, if fabric is torn or if interior material is loose or damaged.
  • Play with adult supervision.

Dueling Rules & Swasher Games

  • Play safely, use the honor system and be honest, get everyone’s permission to duel, and have fun!
  • A tag to the hand or arm means the duelist cannot use that arm and should put it behind their back.
  • A tag to the foot or leg means the duelist cannot run.
  • If both legs have been tagged, the duelist may only stand in place and pivot – they cannot walk.
  • A tag to the torso or back means the duelist is defeated. To symbolize being knocked out, place the Swasher on the head.
  • For team games, such as capture the flag, players may “heal” others by placing their hand on the target’s shoulder and calling out “Heal 1, heal 2, heal 3, heal 4, heal 5.” Getting healed means all wounds are eliminated. Players cannot heal themselves.

Besides these basic dueling rules, there are many ways that Swashers can be used in the Adventure Quest live action roleplaying game. You may order the Adventure Quest Game Book from the Majestic Adventures store for a whole roleplaying game system that utilizes the Swashers along with archetypal characters and magic powers.

You may also hire us to lead a Sword Games event where a professional facilitator will guide all the participants in many exciting games, while watching for safety and fairness. Sword Games pop-up.

Care & Maintenance

Swasher Care & Maintenance

Properly maintained, a Swasher should last for many years. We use some at our camp that were originally crafted 10-20 years ago. To ensure your Swasher lasts as long as possible, it is important to follow these care instructions:

  • Do not get the Swasher wet. Never duel in the rain or snow. Besides making the Swasher heavy and unsafe, water wears down the glue and other materials that make up a Swasher.
  • Do not lean on the Swasher or put excessive weight on them. Do not store them vertically with the soft tip down. These can damage or compress the soft tip and make the Swasher unsafe. If the tip becomes damaged or compressed, the Swasher should be returned to Send to Swasher Repairs for an inexpensive tip replacement.
  • Store Swashers in a dry place with no heavy or hard-edged items on them. Putting hard-edged items or heavy objects on or against a Swasher – even for a short while – causes “dents.” Do not pack them together too tightly or this may also cause dents.
  • Do not store Swashers in excessive heat. High temperatures such as those inside a car parked in a sunny location, can cause the glue and tape that holds the Swasher together internally to loosen or come apart.
  • Do not strike rough surfaces. Outer sheath fabric may be torn easily by tagging rough surfaces such as trees and cement. If the fabric becomes torn, the Swasher is no longer safe to duel with and further deterioration can happen quickly. The Swasher should be returned to Send to Swasher Repairs for an inexpensive sheath replacement.
  • Do not tag hard. The interior of the Swasher is filled with foam and a rigid fiberglass core. If the Swasher strikes a surface too hard, the fiberglass may break and become sharp. To tell whether the core or interior materials have been damaged, squeeze the foam blade from the tip to the hilt, checking for a bent core or punctured foam. If the core is damaged or the foam is ripped, the Swasher must be replaced. Send to Swasher Repairs – a replacement Swasher can be bought for a discount.
  • To clean your Swasher, spot wash with a damp cloth. Swashers that are excessively dirty may require laundering, or may require a new outer sheath. To launder, you may try to untape the outer fabric sheath from the interior. Peel the tape from the base of the Swasher blade or tip of the grip and set aside. Remove the sheath and wash on a cold, gentle cycle. Put the shealth back on and retape using the same tape (or purchase a similar kind – gaffer’s tape is recommended). Swashers may also be returned to Swasher Maintenance for an inexpensive cleaning or sheath replacement.

Heroic Level Boffer Care & Maintenance

In addition to our handmade Swashers, we sell some other makes of boffer that are safe enough to use at our programs. Most of these are latex foam shields and throwing weapons. Latex-coated products require regular maintenance with a silicone treatment. This will keep the coating flexible to resist wear, prevent the latex from drying out, and therefore maintain its safety level during use. Spray or drizzle the silicone treatment directly on the product and work it into the surface with a clean cloth. Avoid treatment on leather handles and other non-latex elements of the product. You may purchase protective silicon spray or gel at our online store.

Because we do not make the heroic level boffers, we are not able to repair them and cannot offer any guarantee or warrantee for them.

Care and Maintenance of Garments and Accessories

Garments and Accessories – Leather

Do not wash with soap and water. Maintain thick leather products with leather grease and a brush, shoe polish, leather wax, or mink oil regularly. Dirt can be brushed off by hand, with a coarse brush, or damp cloth. Keep out of direct sunlight to avoid UV damage/bleaching. Store in a dry, well-ventilated area.

Garments and Accessories – Canvas

Primary recommendation is to hand wash only in cold water with gentle detergent to preserve material. If that is not an option, single colored garments can be machine washed in cold water. If multicolored, dry clean only. Do not tumble dry or bleach; can be ironed on a low setting. Avoid leaving garment in the sun for prolonged periods to prevent UV damage/bleaching. Store garments in a cool, dry place.

Garments – Wool

Always wash separately when washing for the first time. Wool fabrics need to be carefully hand washed with detergent designed for wool. They should be washed in cold water and line-dried to avoid shrinkage.

In addition to Swashers and other boffers, we sell belts, sword holders, and belt pouches, as well as armor, garments, and other accessories in our online store.

Custom Swasher Orders

We make each Swasher by hand, and we can produce custom models and original designs by request. Contact Sales to discuss getting a custom Swasher.

Repairs

Damaged Swashers can often be repaired at a lower cost than replacement. Depending on the length of time since construction and the type of repair, there may be a charge. Tape repairs can be often be done upon request free of charge.

We do not recommend that you attempt repairs. Attempting a repair, including removing any tape, invalidates any and all warranties and could compromise the safety.
